I have always had a strong sense of social justice, inspired by 2 parents who exposed me to the importance of politics, human rights and advocating for a more equal society, I knew that I wanted to have a positive impact on the world. However, I was a chatterbox at school, and I lacked direction and a sense of purpose.
After school I was lucky enough to volunteer and work in Latin America which changed my perspective on life. It was there that I realised I am a great communicator, I love digging deep, understanding people and my greatest sense of fulfilment comes from solving problems and bringing people together. I started to think more about my own community and the experiences that me, my friends and my family had when we grew up in and around Hull.
I came home and got a temporary job, working in admin at an agency that supported people with drug and alcohol addiction. My colleagues encouraged me to apply to study social work at the University of Hull and I cried when I was told I had been awarded a place.
That was 12 years ago now, and I am proud to say I have spent 10 years safeguarding children and families across the Humber region. I have laughed, I have cried, I have supported people through the worst days of their lives, and I have celebrated their successes. Despite it being difficult at times it has been the greatest privilege of my life.
I am new to the role of Practice Educator at the Social Work Academy and now it is my turn to pass on some of the knowledge I have gained over the last decade to our new learners. I will be coordinating their placements, undertaking peer supervision and you might even see me at Hull University supporting a lecture or 2. I am excited for the challenge – and I am sure our learners will teach me a thing or two along the way.
Every child deserves the chance to develop, thrive and achieve their dreams and ambitions. As social workers it is our duty to make sure we do our absolute best for all the families that we work with. I am proud to work for Hull City Council and look forward to supporting our next generation of talented social workers.
